Fall 2025 Update
Nearly 40 years ago, a committed group of neighbors created John Howell Park on land saved from the I-485 freeway project that razed 11 homes on Virginia Avenue and threatened to cut through our historic neighborhood. Now, it’s our turn to revitalize the park for future generations. Whether you enjoy the park for festivals, yoga, dog walks, or the playground, these renovations will make it a more welcoming, vibrant space for all.
For the past four years, many of you have played a vital role in shaping the long-awaited John Howell Park Renovation. Thanks to contributions of all sizes, the VHCA has been able to bring together architects, engineers, and arborists to craft a thoughtful, detailed plan for the project. We've also partnered with the City and local nonprofits to secure both planning and fundraising support. Through these discussions, a phased approach has emerged—allowing us to move the project forward while maximizing our impact. Our first phase will focus on the West side of the park, including:
- Full playground renovation with new equipment
- New community picnic area overlooking the playground
- A rain garden to address stormwater issues
- New ADA-compliant walkways
We're excited to announce that the City of Atlanta has committed $300,000 through the Moving Atlanta Forward bond program, and Park Pride has awarded us a $100,000 grant for new playground equipment. Combined with funds already raised from the community, we’re over halfway to our $950,000 goal.
Now it’s our turn to step up. We’re kicking off a new capital campaign to raise the remaining funds needed to bring this vision to life. Reaching our goal will take energy, enthusiasm, and financial support from everyone who loves our neighborhood and wants the park to reach its full potential. We recently shared an overview of Phase I, including our vision, timeline, and fundraising progress in the annual VHCA Townhall. See John Howell Park 2025 Update.
We’re also pleased to share the formation of Friends of John Howell Park, LLC—created to manage this and future capital projects aimed at maintaining and improving the park. While VHCA retains overall stewardship of the effort, the LLC structure streamlines fundraising and enables the appointment of a dedicated board with a singular mission and focus.
If you have any questions, we’d love to chat or take a walk through the park. Please join us to build a better park and strengthen our community. Thank you for your support!
