AFR Station # 19 Open House

Home » AFR Station # 19 Open House

I had been hearing about the planned renovation efforts for our VaHi Firehouse – but had no idea how big of a project it will be til Firefighter Ian Allum made a presentation at the VaHi  monthly meeting Monday evening.  Ian was accompanied by the architect with her drawings – this ambitious project will restore the building to essentially how it looked in the late 1920’s.  I knew that there was some termite and rot damage to the building – but again did not realize how serious this damage was and how much has to be done to stabilize the structure and make it last for another 80 some years, til Ian made his pitch.  I’m sure many of you already know Ian – as he is the storyteller.

There will be an open house this Saturday from noon til 4 where you can meet the architect, see the plans and the damage that has to be corrected.  You’ve got to make time this Saturday to attend this event at Atlanta’s oldest functioning fire station to meet Ian, and also to see the 1925 American LaFrance fire truck that he has bought to keep at the station.  There will also be a brand new 85th Anniversary t-shirt for sale that features a 1920’s picture of # 19.  They are terrific!

If you are in a group that is looking for a cause to support – this might be your answer.  All donations towards this project go through the Atlanta Fire Foundation which is a 501c3 group.

On a related subject, Kelvin Cochran, is to be our Fire Chief again – http://www.ajc.com/news/atlanta/cochran-to-return-as-544493.html
