Progress & Planning

For the past four years, our community has come together to reimagine John Howell Park. Thanks to your ideas, generosity, and the work of our small but mighty volunteer team, we’ve engaged design experts, arborists and engineers to craft a thoughtful and detailed renovation plan. The City of Atlanta has committed $300,000 through its Moving Atlanta Forward bond program, and Park Pride has awarded us a $100,000 grant for new playground equipment. Combined with funds already raised from the community, we’re over halfway to our $900,000 goal.

Eastside Park Plan: The Great Lawn & Oval

eastside park plan

Renovation Priorities

Rainwater issues

  • Stormwater remediation required by the City of Atlanta
  • Requires the playground to be removed

New Playground

  • Offset lost playground equipment with new playground layout, new pieces and ground cover
  • Choose styles that compliment the park and serve multiple ages

The Great Lawn

  • Revitalize into a lush lawn
  • Maintain the size

Improve and maintain existing assets

  • Tree survey and integration of results into project design
  • Fix water lines to the water fountain, benches, fence posts, signs, etc
  • Install new surface in the Oval
  • Activation through fields, courts, etc
  • No changes to the volleyball courts
  • Pickleball won’t fit with the terrain given elevation changes. It also would disrupt the balance of active and passive uses in the park

Together, we can make this vision a reality.
